Registration for the 2023 International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME) Conference is now open. The METRANS Transportation Consortium will host this year’s event in Long Beach, CA from September 5-8, 2023. Join researchers and industry leaders as they delve into the future of the maritime economy amidst the effects of the pandemic, geopolitical tensions, swift technological advancements, and a growing imperative to address global climate challenges.

Last year’s conference in Busan, Korea welcomed 400 in-person attendees from 39 countries to discuss 250 manuscripts and attend 234 presentations under the theme of “Impact of COVID-19 on the Maritime Industry: Challenges and Responses.” This year’s theme is, “New Realities in the Global Maritime Economy.” Special sessions will feature a discussion of California’s regulatory approach to decarbonization and a session with the World Bank’s transport sector leaders discussion the Bank’s role in goods movement resilience, efficiency, and sustainability. Attendees will also have the opportunity to take a harbor tour to view innovations at the Port of Long Beach in person, thanks to the Port of Long Beach’s sponsorship of the conference.

“IAME has not been to the U.S. in several years,” said METRANS Deputy Director Tom O’Brien. “This is an opportunity to showcase all the work that is taking place in Southern California by both the port community and the research community.”

IAME was founded in 1992 and has since grown into an organization with 300 members from every continent and is an official partner of two major journals in the field of maritime economics, Maritime Policy & Management and Maritime Economics & Logistics.
