VREF Workshop 2014: Transforming Access, Mobility, and Delivery in Cities - Turning Knowledge into Action

Three deserving Ph.D. students from our MetroFreight Center of Excellence were selected to attend the two part VREF Workshop 2014: Transforming Access, Mobility, and Delivery in Cities - Turning Knowledge into Action in New York last month.  Beginning on October 26 with a student reception, Adrien Beziat and Adeline Heitz from the University of Paris – East, and Shuai (Louis) Tang from the University of Buffalo, The State University of New York participated in the VREF Ph.D. Student/Young Researcher Workshop 2014 .  That program took place at Columbia University and was followed by the ensuing major conference in New York City from October 28 – 30.  These young researchers were given the opportunity to share highlights of their research efforts as guests of Volvo Research & Educational Foundations (VREF) for their four day stay in New York, while being introduced to experienced transportation researchers from across the globe.

LA Metro Transportation Planner Guides Student Tour of Downtown Los Angeles Light Rail

METRANS Tier One UTC Introduces New USC Graduate Level Course in Port Policy and Management

We are pleased to announce our new USC graduate level course, Seaport Policy and Management.  Launched this fall and taught by Dr. Geraldine Knatz, former CEO of the Port of Los Angeles, the purpose of this course is to provide the student with an introduction to the vital role that seaports play in accommodating world trade.  After reviewing the historical development of seaports and the public trust doctrine, this course will examine various pattens of port governance found around the world and how those governance patterns can affect port operations, management and business success.  Students learn about U.S. trade policies and the role of various international maritime bodies.  National and local governments that regulate or influence ports and the movement of goods are also discussed.  The course is cross listed with both the Policy and Engineering Schools, and is open to graduate students of all disciplines.
