This CBC documentary led by Ira Basen addresses the behind-the-scenes issues that online shopping causes in the delivery of goods to meet consumers’ rising demands for near instant receipt of their purchases. It includes insight from Alison Conway, Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the City College of New York, on the need for educating transportation and land use planners on the expected impacts of package deliveries on goods movement activity in urban and suburban settings. As we strive to design more livable communities and take measures to add accommodations for walking and bicycling, street and curb space are reduced for truck deliveries, creating unintended and multifaceted consequences. The importance of input from logistics experts is beginning to be recognized in the decision making process with planners, developers, law enforcement professionals and policy makers.
