METRANS

Pacific Southwest Region 9 UTC Outreach and Technology Transfer

The goal of our outreach and technology transfer program is to enhance the transition of research to practice. We use comprehensive, media-based communications, signature events, cross-sectoral information dissemination, engagement, and demonstrations across all modal segments to achieve our goal.

Communications

We carry out a comprehensive program of media and communications, taking advantage of the rapidly changing media landscape. We produce one magazine and two newsletters.  The goal of Transfers magazine, our PSR flagship publication, is to bring transportation research to policymakers and industry in a more condensed and accessible format. Our newsletters, METRANS News and the student publication, METRANS on the Move, feature PSR research, student awards and activities, new program initiatives, and summaries of PSR events. Content from each is shared for social media publications. Research briefs, short summaries of research results suitable for a non-technical audience, are a requirement of research funding and are posted on the website and disseminated via email, Facebook and Twitter.

Signature Events

Region 9 Annual Congress: The PSR Congress gathers transportation stakeholders from throughout the region together to share new research results, best practices, and education and training tools produced by PSR. It also serves as a major networking event to build a regional transportation community. Each year the Congress is hosted by one of the consortium schools, in partnership with consortium universities and government and industry partners.

Annual State of the Trade and Transportation Industry Town Hall: Town Hall is an annual practitioner-oriented educational forum that engages leaders from industry, government, organized labor, and the community to explore critical transportation and trade issues. A custom video production introduces the topic and sets the context for the discussion.

International Urban Freight Conference: I-NUF is held every two years, and draws a multidisciplinary range of researchers, private sector and governmental leaders from around the world. The focus is to improve the efficiency and sustainability of urban freight. It has played a critical role in establishing urban freight as new field of study.

Lake Arrowhead Symposium: UCLA has hosted the Lake Arrowhead Symposium on the Transportation - Land Use - Environment Connection since 1991, bringing together academics, practitioners, and officials from the federal, state, regional, and local level to discuss a particular focus topic. Recent topics include investing in sustainable mobility, climate change, and resilient cities and regions.

National Summit on Transportation and Environmental Sustainability: For 28 years, UC Davis has organized the biennial Asilomar Conference, the leading international conference on transportation, energy, and environmental sustainability. Organized under the auspices of the Energy and Alternative Fuels Committees of the Transportation Research Board and the U.S. Climate Change Task Force, this conference brings together over 200 experts and leaders from throughout the transportation and energy sectors.
