Introduction The combined resources of USC and CSULB provide a comprehensive array of undergraduate, graduate, and professional development programs. These encompass all aspects of transportation, including public policy, planning and engineering, and transportation logistics. The USC Viterbi School of Engineering has eight academic departments, one division, and several programs serving approximately 1,900 undergraduate and 3,300 graduate students, utilizing state-of-the-art laboratories, classrooms, and live high-speed Internet broadcast systems. Of 165 faculty members, 22 are members of the National Academy of Engineering and many have won National Science Foundation Career Awards. The School is also a national leader in engineering research, with annual external expenditures of over $135 million. The Viterbi School provides unique undergraduate and graduate programs to qualified students leading to academic degrees in engineering; extends the frontiers of engineering knowledge; stimulates and encourages in its students qualities of scholarship, leadership, and character; serves the city, the state, the nation and the world by providing for the continuing education of engineers; and to provide professional engineering leadership in the solution of community, regional, national and global problems. The Viterbi School offers academic programs leading to the Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The mission of the USC School of Policy, Planning, and Development (SPPD) is to become the premier school for educating leaders and creating knowledge for innovative governance and place-based solutions for the betterment of communities worldwide. Toward that end, SPPD educates and trains leaders who can create multidisciplinary approaches to the challenging and complex issues of governing, managing, and building contemporary urban communities. SPPD offers five professional master's degree programs, two doctoral level programs, and an undergraduate major. The five master's level programs—in Public Policy, Public Administration, Planning, Real Estate Development, and Health Administration—join theory with practice and emphasize experiential and professional learning. The doctoral programs allow a select group of students to work closely with faculty on important areas of research and scholarly inquiry. Graduate-level students at SPPD have considerable latitude to design their own programs in order to pursue their specialized areas of interest and further their professional development. Undergraduates pursue the Bachelor of Science in Public Policy, Management, and Planning, which builds on a well-rounded liberal arts core with classes and practical training in policy, management, and planning in preparation for either graduate school or the job market. USC is one of the nation's major research universities, and SPPD is a renowned contributor to the university's reputation. Most of the school's research is conducted through its centers, institutes and research groups. These include the Institute for Civic Enterprise, the lead research organization of the school; the Center on Philanthropy and Public Policy; the Center for Health Financing, Policy and Management; the Civic Engagement Initiative; the Lusk Center for Real Estate, within which are housed the Keston Infrastructure Institute and the Casden Forecast; METRANS, a two-university transportation research center; and within the Urban Growth and Development Group, the Center for Economic Development and the Population Dynamics Research Group. During this past year, the country's first Homeland Security Center of Excellence was awarded to SPPD and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, and The Tomás Rivera Policy Institute—the nation's premier Latino think tank—moved its headquarters to SPPD. Graduates of SPPD hold important positions in government at all levels, in the business world, and in the nonprofit sector. Many remain closely associated with the school and play important roles in its leadership, research agenda, curriculum development, networking for students and graduates, and resource development. CSULB University College and Extension Services (UCES) is one of California State University Long Beach’s (CSULB) eight colleges and the community outreach branch of the university. CSULB provides additional access to the university’s academic programs and educational resources by offering over 550 credit and professional (non-credit) programs. The CSULB Center for International Trade and Transportation (CITT) was established in 1977 as the Center for Transportation Studies. In 1998 it was renamed and assigned to UCES as a self-governing, multi-function special unit at CSULB. CITT is a multi-disciplinary center for multimodal transportation studies and integrated logistics research, education, training, and policy analysis as well as community outreach. The Center also functions as the Trade and Transportation Cluster of the Gateway Cities Partnership, Inc., a regional non-profit economic collaborative comprising 27 cities in Los Angeles County, including Long Beach. CITT is a collaborative forum dedicated to the development, distillation, and broad dissemination of objective information about the goods movement industry. CITT accomplishes this through the development and the delivery of targeted education, innovative research, and outreach programs, serving the mission of the university and the needs of industry and the community. The Center’s Policy and Steering Committee members represent stakeholders from all points along the supply chain. These include importers and exporters, longhsore labor, ocean carriers, terminal operators, truckers, railroads, warehouses, customs brokers, freight forwarders, communities, the public sector and regional economic collaboratives. California State University, Long Beach has an established reputation for professional education in international trade and port operations. The Global Logistics Specialist (GLS®) program is the cornerstone of CITT’s efforts to set a professional standard for the international trade and logistics industry and provide the industry with a cadre of well educated professionals. Built upon a university/industry partnership, the GLS® curriculum offers broad based, hands-on training for individuals entering work at any point of the logistics chain. CSULB, through CITT, also offers a Master of Arts degree in Global Logistics. The unique degree program applies the analytical skills of a more traditional business degree to a global logistics setting. The CSULB College of Engineering offers four year curricula leading to Bachelor of Science degrees in the disciplines of engineering, computer science, and engineering technology as well as master’s and Ph.D. degree programs. The B.S. programs provide broad education and training for entry to the professions and continuing academic work toward advanced degrees. Undergraduate programs provide opportunities to specialize in the areas of aerospace, biomedical, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, industrial-management, manufacturing, materials, and mechanical engineering. Master of Science degrees are offered in aerospace, civil, computer, electrical and mechanical engineering, and in computer science. The Master of Science in Engineering is also offered in inter-disciplinary areas. The M.S. in Engineering Management is an on-line program offered jointly with California State University, Dominguez Hills. The Ph.D. in Engineering and Industrial Applied Mathematics is offered jointly with the Claremont Graduate University. The College of Engineering offers unique certificate programs tied to the primary disciplines. These include Energy Conversion and Power Systems Engineering, and Aerospace Manufacturing. The College is also home to the Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement (MESA) Center, a program that serves low income and educationally disadvantaged students at both the pre-college and college levels. The MESA Center comprises two distinct programs. The MESA Schools Program (MSP) partners with middle and high schools in the Los Angeles basin to prepare students to attend college in the disciplines of mathematics, engineering and science. The MESA Engineering Program (MEP) provides non-remedial academic support services to matriculated college students. The CSULB Department of Economics, within the College of Liberal Arts, offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in economics. This degree prepares students for a variety of careers in business and government; and lays the foundation for teaching in elementary and secondary schools and for more advanced study in economics, law and other related fields. The Department also offers minors in economics, business economics and international economics along with a concentration in liberal studies. The Masters program was established in 1968. Major areas of specialization at the graduate level include international economics, econometrics and natural resource economics. UCES and the Department of Economics share oversight responsibilities for the Master of Arts in Global Logistics program. The Chair of the Department of Economics serves as the Director of the MAGL. |
