Seven MetroFreight researchers from Los Angeles, New York, and Paris presented research papers at the Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF) Conference, “Urban Freight 2016: Plan for the Future – Sharing Urban Space,” in Gothenburg, Sweden from October 17-19. This was the second international conference organized by the Urban Freight Platform (UFP), an initiative supported by VREF.

Quanquan Chen, a PhD Candidate in Civil Engineering at the City College of New York, was awarded a Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF) Study Visit Grant.  Quanquan has been working with the MetroFreight team at the University Transportation Research Center (UTRC) under the guidance of advisor Dr. Alison Conway to study parking activity associated with curbside delivery to residential buildings in New York City.  From November 2nd to 21st, 2016, she traveled to Paris, France to visit with MetroFreight partners at IFSTTAR.

Thursday, October 27, 2016 marked the first day of trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) for ZTO Express, a Chinese delivery firm that was founded 14 years ago. It raised $1.4 billion from its listing as an IPO, the largest on Wall Street this year. ZTO is expecting significant growth potential of home deliveries in China and claims higher profit margins than FedEx or UPS. Alibaba is its main customer, accounting for 70% of ZTO’s business.

While attending the VREF Conference on Urban Freight 2016 in Sweden, Alison Conway, Assistant Professor, The City College of New York, was interviewed by a representative of Chalmers University of Technology. Using the city streets of Gothenburg as a back drop, Professor Conway pointed out urban freight challenges and site specific solutions that she observed in regards to safety, parking and congestion. The Volvo Research & Educational Foundations (VREF) supports the research efforts of the MetroFreight Center of Excellence.
