Project Objective:
In this project we plan to study, analyze, and evaluate methods of improving terminal efficiency and reducing traffic congestion in the areas surrounding ports. The specific objectives of the project are:

  • To develop a simulation test bed that will allow the microscopic simulation and evaluation of terminal concepts and truck movement strategies inside the terminals and the traffic network outside the terminals in an integrated manner.
  • To use the test bed to analyze and evaluate truck movement concepts developed by the PIs in previous years, quantify their effect on traffic congestion outside the terminals and on the efficiency of the terminal operations as well as motivate new concepts.
  • To demonstrate our results using real data from a selected terminal and traffic network in the Los Angeles/Long Beach Port area.

Task Descriptions:
1. Microscopic simulation of terminal operations.
2. Microscopic simulation of traffic network.
3. Cost Model.
4. Empty container reuse strategies.
5. Inland port and dedicated truck lanes.
6. Central processing and allocation of chassis.
7. Final Report.
