Please join us for the third National Urban Freight Conference.

The purpose of the Conference is to examine the impacts of goods movement and international trade in metropolitan areas. It gives researchers and practitioners a unique opportunity to consider the “urban side” of freight across many disciplines.

We invite abstract submissions for National Urban Freight Conference 2009. Abstracts are due by July 15, 2009.

Metropolitan areas are the focus of economic activity.  Cities around the world are connected via the global economy, and global economic flows are concentrated around the hubs of commerce and trade.  The largest metropolitan areas are home to our busiest airports, largest ports, and largest intermodal centers. Perhaps surprisingly, our understanding of how freight and international trade affect urban areas remains limited. The distribution of economic and environmental impacts within and across metropolitan areas merits further documentation. Tools for modeling and forecasting freight flows within regions are not well developed. The nature of the goods movement supply chain is still poorly understood, and implications of the supply chain logic for urban areas are only developing. This Conference seeks to contribute to our understanding of freight and trade in metropolitan areas by bringing participants from many disciplines together to share research results.

We are seeking papers and presentations on any aspect of urban goods movement. We encourage submissions from both within and outside the US. This year we are soliciting submission of abstracts for papers or presentations.  Papers submitted by the deadline will be included in the Conference CD and will be considered for possible inclusion in a special journal issue.  See details below. Major topical areas include:

  • Models for transportation, port, air, intermodal operation; impact analysis
  • Port operations and productivity
  • Trucking/air/rail economics and logistics, productivity, labor issues
  • Local and regional environmental externalities: congestion, air quality, etc.
  • Policy and institutional issues in urban goods movement
  • Security/vulnerability of goods movement
  • Best practices/lessons learned
