Christian Redfearn Studies Cities, Climbs Mountains

When Christian Redfearn hikes the mountains behind his home, he relishes the irony of high-altitude wilderness in the midst of the sprawling Los Angeles urban environment. One of his continuing research interests is the trade-off between the development patterns of modern horizontal cities and the need for shorter job commutes-the tension between horizontal and vertical pressures. A city's transportation system can make the difference.

Najmedin Meshkati, USC Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, spent 60 hours testifying, finally convincing a judge that pedestrian bridges are needed at two intersections where the new Los Angeles Expo Line light rail will pass at speeds of up to 55 mph.
